ANDROCLES AND THE LION

Long ago, there lived a slave named Androcles. In those days slaves had no freedom. They lived a miserable life. Once the Roman master treated him inhumanely. To save himself from the anger of his master, Androcles fled into a forest. He took shelter in the cave. Soon a lion appeared there limping. There was a thorn in his paw. The slave took out the thorn from his paw. The lion was relieved of pain. He then left the cave.

After somedays the slave was caught by the soldiers of his master and was ordered to be thrown to the hungry lion's cage. A public show was arranged. It seemed that he would put an end to his life. The lion reared but did not harm the slave. Soon he recognized him and began to lick his hands and feet. It was the same lion whom he had helped in the cave. The spectators were amazed at it. The master learnt a great lesson. Thereafter he started treating all the slaves well.
