Once a miller and his son were going to a fair to sell their ass. On the way they
met a party of girls. One of them said, "Look at these fools. They are walking while their ass is going along merrily. Why don't they ride it?" Hearing this, the miller asked his son to ride on the ass. They again came across some old men. One of them remarked. "Look at the foolish boy! He is riding while his old father is going on foot." At once the boy got down the ass and the miller rode on his back. Then some women passed by. They said, "How strange! The old man is not ashamed of himself. His poor son can hardly walk." Hearing this remark, the father took the boy up with him on the ass. You had better carry it on your shoulders". Then the miller and his son got off. They tied its legs with a rope and hung it on a pole. As they were carrying it over a bridge, the ass gave a violent kick. The rope broke, and the ass fell down into the stream and was drowned.
